[INTERVIEW] JYJ’s Record Sales – Junsu’s Exclusive Interview With Elcomercio.pe
It was unexpected for the tickets for a concert held by a K-pop group in our country to be sold out within a day.
The news spread to Korea, of how JYJ members, Junsu, Jaejoong and Yoochun, made history when the tickets for their concert in Lima sold out within half an hour. Should you not be a fan of K-pop (the most popular mainstream pop culture in Asia), these three names would be unfamiliar to you, and you would not understand why thousands of fans got excited on Saturday over their arrival. None of their songs have ever appeared in television broadcasts or even on the radio, but their fans are even more passionate than when Justin Bieber came. Junsu was surprised when we informed him of this.
Did you expect that your concert to be held in Lima would set a new record?
I really did not expect it. The distance between (Korea and Peru) is really far, and this is our first time visiting Peru, so we really did not expect such a situation. It is a pleasant surprise. We are truly thankful to our fans, we know it must not have been easy.
Have you heard anything about Peru?
We did hear some things, such as how Peru is a great South American country and is very developed. We also heard that the people are happy, beautiful and passionate. Another thing that comes to mind are the exotic dances.
I heard you were in Brazil for a while, how did you feel about your first contact with South America?
I think that it was a culture shock, but I really liked (Brazil). The people know how to appreciate life, and are very friendly. I am happy to be in South America, because I know there are many fascinating things here. But it is a pity that we are only going to two countries for performances this time. Hopefully we will be able to visit more countries next year.
Many female (fans) are learning Korean in order to understand the meanings of song lyrics. Have you thought about giving back to them by singing a Spanish song?
We have thought about it. We hope that we will be able to share our emotions and feelings with the fans during the World Tour this time. Our fans have a lot of interest in our language and culture, if we have the opportunity, we will do the same. But currently, to be honest, we are not prepared yet.
You have recorded quite a few English songs. How important is the US market to you?
We do not want to enter the US market. What I mean is, when we think about the US market, we think of the fans and the outstanding musicians there. To us, what is important is not how well we are marketed. Rather, we want to produce great music and learn in that country.
When you left TVXQ, did you think that you would succeed as JYJ?
I think that it is more accurate to say that we ended our relationship with the agency. TVXQ, as we existed as 5, will always be significant to us. When we left the company that I spoke of, we thought that it was the end of our music careers. Fortunately, that was not the case. Because of the many people that held onto their love for the three of us, we returned. It is these people who motivate us to work harder to make better music and better programmes in order to repay them.
Do you have plans to work on any new projects?
In the later half of this year, we will be recording our new English album, as well as holding a new World Tour. This World Tour will be based on a different concept. Besides that, we also have our individual activities: Yoochun has been filming his drama “Rooftop Prince”, Jaejoong was casted for an MBC drama, and I have been participating in a musical.
Have you considered translating your individuality into music, that is to say, carrying out solo performances?
Presently, we only have plans as JYJ.
